NamWater cleans Omahenene-Oshakati canal

THE Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) yesterday started a two-week cleaning exercise on the Omahenene-Oshakati canal.

The entire canal needs to be cleaned in order to improve water supply to the main treatment plants at Olushandja, Ombalantu, Ogongo and Oshakati.

The cleaning of the canal will entail removing silt, vegetation and debris, and over 1 000 casual workers will be employed for the whole exercise.

NamWater spokesperson Johannes Shigwedha said the canal will be cleaned in sections in order to minimise water supply disruptions to customers.

During the cleaning at the border section of the canal, the pumping of water from Angola will be stopped. To ensure supplies to Oshakati, water will be pumped from the Olushandja Dam to Oshakati.

“The major NamWater customers who will be affected by the two-day water supply shutdown are the Etunda green scheme, Ruacana town and Oshifo,” Shigwedha said.

NamWater will spend N$3,5 million on the exercise.
