NamWater gives Rundu N$2 million water credit

NAMWATER has confirmed that it has allocated the Rundu Town Council with credit worth N$2 million to restore running water at the town.

In a statement released on Friday morning, NamWater said that running water was thus restored at the town on Thursday.

This follows Rundu having been without tap water for days, forcing residents to source water from the Okavango River.

The council said earlier this week that residents owe it close to N$300 million in overdue municipal bills, which has negatively affected the implementation of some of its developmental projects and services.

Council spokesperson Benjamin Makayi on Tuesday said some areas at the town have been without water since Sunday.

He says the council spends about N$6 million per month on buying prepaid water from NamWater, but only 30% of its residents pay their water bills, making it hard to fulfill their mandate.

He said the council currently owes NamWater about N$124 million.
