Vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibia must get rid of shacks.
She spoke to fire victims at Otweya informal settlement at Walvis Bay while visiting the area on Tuesday.
Residents lost their homes and belongings in a blaze last Friday, and one man died.
“Why are fires so common at Walvis Bay? Even our police are not able to understand this fire. This is not the only place where you have shacks, but these fires at Walvis Bay are really worrying,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
“As the government, we will do our best to address this challenge. We must get rid of shacks at our towns. We can only do it if we cooperate as citizens of this country,” she said.
The vice president donated food parcels to the 190 victims.
Nandi-Ndaitwah promised them more support.
Erongo governor Neville Andre said he appreciated the support.
“When she heard about this, she was already invited to an event at Swakopmund, but thought she should also come and show us solidarity in this disaster.
“As a caring mother who loves her children, she thought she must show her solidarity and wish all of us strength during this difficult time. We are happy for the solidarity,” he said.
