THE Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) secured grants for 15 students from the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (Nimt) and Academy of Business English (ABE) as part of its campaign for access to education.
Speaking at the awarding of the grants to the students in Windhoek on Monday, Nanso president Simon Taapopi said Nimt and ABE share their belief that the doors of learning must be open and accessible to those who seek them.
Thirteen students will be studying office administration at ABE for six months in Windhoek, while two will be studying electrical engineering and fitting and turning for four years at Nimt campus at Arandis.
Taapopi added that Nanso’s ethos to realise an education that drives social progress and development is in fact in line with their programme of ensuring that there is access to education, particularly vocational training.
“The education that we acquire must be a conduit to change our social and material conditions. We must not just acquire education for the sake of it, but to enable us to effectively change our communities, environments and break the cycle of poverty and destitution among the communities we come from,” he said.
Taapopi urged the beneficiaries to make good use of these scholarships.
“Go on to ensure that we innovate and change our societies,” he urged. The scholarship will cover the students’ tuition fees and accommodation at Nimt and the tuition for 13 ABE students.
