NBC calls for comedians

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) is calling on all comedians to submit a clip of their work for consideration for an upcoming new show.

The producer of the show, Pombili Shilongo, said they are looking for comedians that can help them reflect on the struggles and triumphs of everyday Namibians in ways that are funny and will excite the nation.

Shilongo is keen about the brand new project. “As a producer I am always looking for creative ideas to tell Namibian stories. Anyone can enter. We are looking for new and established comedians, so if you are super funny and want a platform, then this is for you.”

Shilongo said the show will have the viewers in stitches as she believes laughter is a beautiful thing which helps people keep it together when things fall apart.

“The show will be unique and oh so funny. However at this moment we have not completely worked out all the details as to how the selection process will work, but it will certainly be impacted by the content submitted by each comedian. The idea is to have diverse voices and to touch on as many subject matters as possible,” she said.

Shilongo is eager to produce something that is not only amazing for the NBC’s brand, but something that she thinks the broadcaster’s audiences will consume with appreciation.

“There are so many amazing comedians and only a few platforms. It’s centred in Windhoek and not reaching a wide enough audience. This is an exciting start.”

Shilongo expressed enthusiasm about the fact that NBC keeps improving their local content. She believes it is important to celebrate Namibian talent as it is a huge contributor to the growth of the nation.

“We have seen this with the development of two reality shows last year namely ‘Body with Maria Nepembe’ and ‘On The Streets’. These are indeed exciting times for local content.”

The name and date of the show’s airing will soon be revealed by the national broadcaster, says Shilongo. For now, the team is busy planning different aspects of the show.

Interested comedians can submit links to their online work to pshilongo@nbc.na or submit recordings of performances on a flashdrive and deliver it to Shilongo at NBC’s premises in Windhoek. The deadline for submissions is 31 January.
