nc15-Erongo Region

Erongo Region have won the Namibian Newspaper Cup only once before – in 2012 when they beat Oshana 2-0 in the final.

This year they once again have a talented squad but they have been drawn in a tough group, along with Khomas, Karas and Oshikoto.

The core of their squad comes from the successful Duinesig Combined School that recently won the nationwide Erongo Red Schools tournament in Walvis Bay for the third year in a row.

These players include the pacy right winger Mario Hashipala who recently represented the Namibian U-17 squad in South Africa and central midfielder Anthony Khan who plays for Northern Stars in the Erongo Second Division.

Their talented midfielder Luciano Fischer was signed up by Premier League side Orlando Pirates at the beginning of the year and has already represented them this season, while goal keeper Jason Aawala is also a member of the successful Duinesig side of the past three years.

Their coach Batista Gaweseb said their preparation had not gone very well, but he had high hopes for his team.

“Our preparation has not been very good, to be honest. We only had a week to prepare while we couldn’t bring in players from some of the regions,” he said.

“The core of our team have formed part of the successful Duinesig team over the past three years, so they know each other well. We will also be playing two regions that we played last year in Khomas and Karas again so we know their style of play and will use that to our advantage,” he added.
