Match six of the first day of The Namibian Newspaper Cup saw the Kavango East Region edging neighbours Zambezi 1-0.
The match started off at a rather slow tempo with both teams failing to create any noteworthy goal scoring opportunities.
However, after 15 minutes, the match sprung to life when Esra Nauyale from Kavango East hit the crossbar with a long range drive, much to the crowd’s delight.
More pressure from Kavango resulted in Zambezi defender Mubuta Musilizo giving away a penalty, with opportunist Nauyale not wasting the opportunity as he netted from the spot to hand his side the lead, sending goalkeeper Michael Simasiku the wrong way.
Buoyed by the goal, the Kavango East boys kept up the momentum but could not register a second by half time.
The second half saw the Zambezi wasting several opportunities to draw level. In fact, poor finishing characterised the second half, with Kavango also guilty of missing the target when it seemed easier to score on numerous occasions.
Kavango East players Moses Petrus, Ngeve Kasumana and Frans Namufinda were especially wasteful in front of goal as they missed sitters each.
Given their dominance, Kavango East ought to have won by a bigger margin but they also found Zambezi goalkeeper Simasiku in inspired form.
Goal scorer Esra Nauyala scooped the man of the match trophy.
