NDF officer arrested over fatal shooting

THE Namibian Defence Force officer involved in the fatal shooting of the 32-year-old Benisius Kalola in Windhoek yesterday has been arrested.

Police inspector general Sebastian Ndeitunga confirmed the arrest today, adding that the matter is being handled by the military police.

Although he could not ascertain when the suspect would appear in court, he said it would be within 48 hours after his arrest.

The constitutionally stipulated period of 48 hours within which an arrested person has to appear in court is often not adhered to when it falls on a weekend.

Kalola was shot at around 10h45 on Thursday at the single quarters in Katutura, during the police’s joint ‘Operation Kalahari Desert’ anti-crime exercise with the NDF, and later succumbed to his injuries while at Katutura Intermediate Hospital.
