NDF and SKW won the men and women’s titles at the final volleyball tournament of the year, the NVF Cup which took place at the DTS Club in Windhoek over the weekend.
The finals saw the DTS Hall packed to the rafters as the fans cheered their teams on with some vociferous support.
The men’s final between NDF and Khomas Nampol was a humdinger and although NDF won the match 3-1, the match was much closer than the scoreline suggests.
Both teams tried to play a fast game which Botswana’s national team had demonstrated to Namibia’s national players when they won the regional qualifiers in Gaborone last month. Many attacks were so fast, that the block did not have a chance to react.
Not surprisingly, both teams’ national players – Eddy Uyepa and Andreas Engombe of the NDF and Rehabeam Hengari and Clemence Hamutenya of Nampol – were the standout players of the day.
In the women’s competition there were no upsets as all the results went as expected.
The women’s play-off for third place was a close affair, with Revivals beating Khomas Nampol 3-1, and being pushed to 27-25 in the third set.
The 18-year-old Lynette Titus and the pregnant Catherine Thomas impressed for Revivals, while national players Maria Shikongo and Theopolina Shikulo were Nampol’s standout players.
The women’s final was however a one-sided affair as SKW easily beat NDF 3-0.
SKW’s two main spikers, Anna Rosa Mupiri and Elina Veijo reeled in the points although Lea Angula was able to block them at times.
Unfortunately for NDF, the hard and effective spikes of Anna Hengona did not produce as many points as in previous games.
With the victory SKW capped a great year after they had earlier also won the Bank Windhoek National Volleyball League.
