NDF soldier arrested after daughter’s rape

A NAMIBIAN Defence Force member from Swakopmund has been arrested after allegedly raping his daughter (14) for the past eight years.

Erongo police spokesperson inspector Ileni Shapumba on Tuesday said the man (35) has allegedly been raping his daughter since 2013.

He is said to have threatened to kill her and her mother if she ever told anyone, Shapumba said.

The girl, the eldest of four siblings, was staying with both her parents at Swakopmund’s Mondesa suburb.

The man allegedly started exposing his daughter to pornographic material on a regular basis in 2013 after which he would rape her.Shapumba said the family this past weekend watched a movie with a sex scene on television, which resulted in the mother using the opportunity to educate her children on sexual abuse.

“This is when the victim started crying, causing the mother to ask more questions, and telling her daughter to reveal anything that was disturbing her. That is how everything came out,” he said.

“An argument broke out when the mother confronted her husband, and this is also when the police were contacted, and the suspect was eventually arrested.”

The victim is currently staying with her mother, while her father appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody and the matter was postponed until 5 October for further investigation.

“We encourage folks to keep an eye on their children, and if there are any suspicions, it is the parents’ responsibility to ascertain what is happening. What is disturbing is that these children are being abused by those they trust the most,” Shapumba said.
