WINDHOEK – Namibia’s senior netball team lost its first three games at the 2015 Netball World Cup qualifiers currently taking place in Gaborone, Botswana.
Namibia was selected to play World Cup qualifying games against Botswana, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya in Gaborone, Botswana from 14 to 20 September this year.
The team has been drawn in a group with host nation Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
Only the top two teams will qualify for the World Cup, slated to take place in Australia from 07 to 16 August 2015.
The team which ends in third place will also be in Australia to take part in the developmental games during the same period.
A statement availed to Nampa by Team Namibia officials at the games on Thursday said the national netball team lost their third game in the competition against Zimbabwe.
Namibia lost the first quarter 14-8, and were trailing 30-13 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter they were down 50-18.
This has so far been the heaviest defeat the team suffered at the tournament.
On Wednesday, they lost 54-47 to Zambia. They won the first quarter 14-10, but soon trailed 26-23 at halftime and 39-36 by the third quarter.
In the opening game on Tuesday, the team lost 49-36 to host nation Botswana.
Namibia once again won the opening quarter 10-9, but trailed 24-20 at halftime and 36-28 by the third quarter.
The squad consists of Tusnelde Fillemon, Susan van Zyl, Joeline Dunn, Eve Hamaalwa, Juane Jansen van Vuuren, Schoerita van der Merwe, Vetarapi Ngapite, Glyneth Kazonganga, Menette Muvangua, Jatjinda Kambatuku, Twaneth Harases, Augusta Sethie, Melissa Neis, Delila Keja, Lyan Pura and Maretha Burger. – Nampa
