New champions emerge at volleyball tourney

ACTION-PACKED… In the men’s final Namibia correctional services (yellow) took down defending champions Active Performer Academy by 3 sets to one in an action-packed game.

The annual Bank Windhoek Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Doc Tournament concluded with Namibia Correctional Services (men) and Shining Stars (women) overthrowing defending champions Active Performer Academy and Revivals to claim victory at the event.

The tournament, held at the Dome at Swakopmund, attracted 37 teams and players from across Namibia and beyond.

Joseph Amakali, the technical director of the federation, expressed satisfaction with the event, highlighting the annual tournament’s long-standing tradition of almost 40 years.

“The excitement generated by the competition has attracted international players from Botswana, Germany, the United States and Angola. The tournament serves as a launchpad for regional leagues and offers a platform for local talent to shine,” he said.

The federation is also preparing to host the International Zone Beach Volleyball League tournament next weekend. This event will feature players from the Southern African Development Community competing for points and awards from the International Volleyball Federation.

Amakali acknowledged the challenges teams travelling from afar faced, as the expenses of attending the tournament often outweighs the prize money. Despite this, he praised the players for their dedication to the sport and expressed the hope that an increase in sponsorship would alleviate the financial burden on participating teams.

As the Bank Windhoek NVF Doc Tournament continues to grow in popularity and scale, the future of volleyball in Namibia looks bright, he said.

“With the emergence of young talent and increasing interest from international players, the sport is set to reach new heights in the coming years,” he hoped.
