New generation of leaders should rise – Ndeitunga

Ohangwena region governor Sebastian Ndeitunga says a new generation of leaders should rise up and embrace the responsibility of economic emancipation.

Speaking during a belated commemortion of Heroes Day at Oshikunde on Friday, Ndeitunga said since many stalwarts of the liberation struggle are growing older, courageous leaders need to step forward.

“The struggle for economic emancipation, equality and justice for all Namibians must continue, because despite efforts already made by government, our country still faces challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and unequal distribution of resources.

“The battles for economic freedom will no longer be fought with arms as we now live in a peaceful country, Instead, we must engage in battles of ideas using democratic means and mechanisms provided for in the Constitution to achieve economic emancipation,” he said.

Heroes Day is observed annually on 26 August, which is the date Namibia’s war for independence began at Omugulugwombashe in the Omusati region in 1966.
