New N$30 note available

THE Bank of Namibia says the N$30 note that was launched on 21 March, Independence Day, will be available at all commercial banks starting today.

The new note is not available for dispensation at automatic teller machines yet.

In a press statement issued this week, the bank’s spokesperson, Kazembire Zemburuka, said the N$30 commemorative banknote will be used together with the current family of banknotes, and all banknotes are to be accepted as legal tender for the payment of goods and services in Namibia.

To obtain the N$30 banknote from commercial banks, one will have to exchange an equivalent amount of the current family of banknotes or coins.

Zemburuka said since the launch of the note, the Bank of Namibia has conducted public education on its characteristics and security features.

On the front, the note depicts the faces of the current president and his two predecessors, while the back has a transparent window depicting the Namibian black rhino.

Other features on the note include a transparent effect between the diamond-shaped window and the value 30 with gold ink and six clusters of raised dots in the top-right corner, which helps those who are visually impaired and partially sighted to identify the value of the note.

Over N$4,2 billion worth of notes and N$246 million worth of coins were circulated last year, and N$2,6 billion worth of new notes were issued to ensure the notes changing hands remain of good quality.

Zemburuka said other features of the note can be found on the central bank’s website.
