PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah joined a growing list of women presidents on the African continent, following her inauguration as Namibia’s fifth head of state on Friday.
Below is the list of women who have accepted the highest office in their respective countries.
- Sylvie Kinigi, acting president of Burundi from February to October 1993
- Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, acting president of South Africa in September 2005
- Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia from January 2006 to January 2018
- Rose Rogombé, interim president of Gabon from June 2009 to October 2009
- Monique Bellepeau, acting president of Mauritius from March to July 2012 and May to June 2015
- Joyce Banda, president of Malawi from April 2012 to May 2014
- Catherine Samba-Panza, acting president of Central African Republic from January 2014 to March 2016
- Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, president of Mauritius from June 2015 to March 2018
- Sahle-Work Zewde, president of Ethiopia from October 2018 to present
- Samia Hassan, president of Tanzania from March 2021 to present
