NO MORE VICTIM BLAMING

Windhoek’s annual Slut Shame Walk (SSW) took place in the capital on Saturday.

Approximately 40 demonstrators gathered at Ausspannplatz Circle to protest victim blaming, Namibia’s high incidences of rape and the patriarchal culture that enables it.

The walk, led by SSW founder Nsozi Mwazi and entertainment personality Chilli Bite, was held under the theme “the way we dress does not mean yes”.

The theme highlights the fact that whether women and children wear burkas, pants or miniskirts, they may still be sexually assaulted and the fault is always with the rapist not the victim.

SSW included a moment of silence for victims and survivors of rape and gender-based violence, which was observed on Independence Avenue.

The protest was capped with an afternoon of workshops on trauma, forging an end to victim blaming, what to do when you have been sexually assaulted and legalising sex work, at Zoo Park Amphitheatre.

SSW will have its second session following a similar format at Swakopmund on Saturday, 29 April.

Protestors are invited to the march beginning at the corner of Moses //Garoeb Street at 12h00 and to join a workshop at Thomas Amunyela Amphitheatre at 13h00.
