Khomas governor visits mother who lost children in fire
Khomas governor Sam Nujoma (jr) on Sunday visited the family of the two children who died in a shack fire at the One Nation informal settlement in Windhoek over the weekend.
It is reported that the shack caught fire at around 22h00 on Saturday while the children were sleeping.
The victims’ mother was reportedly at work and their older brother (20) was at a neighbours’ house at the time.
The death of the children, a boy (6) and a girl (4), has deeply shaken the nation, Nujoma told family members.
“No parent should have to bury their child, especially under such devastating circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this painful moment.
“We are here today, not just to mourn, but also to stand in solidarity with this community. Your pain is our pain. Your loss is our loss,” Nujoma said.
He said the Khomas Regional Council will be supporting the family in the mourning period.
The incident, he added, highlights the urgent and continuing challenges of housing, safety, and infrastructure many people are faced with.
“It is not acceptable that in 2025, families still live in structures that offer little to no protection from fire, the cold, or other dangers.
“We recognise the deep scars this tragedy has left on the entire One Nation settlement, and we are here to say you are not alone,” Nujoma said.
Prime minister Elijah Ngurare also visited the family on Sunday.
He expressed his condolences, and asked the family to support each other while grieving.
He said the government, through its various disaster stakeholders, will offer the family the necessary assistance in due course.
