No stopping us now – Johnson-Sirleaf

FORMER Liberian president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia said African women have come a long way in their fight for gender equality that nothing can stop them now.

Johnson-Sirleaf said this during a meeting with the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus and the National Assembly’s standing committee on gender issues in Windhoek this morning.

“If you take a look around the continent right now, you will see change in women’s limitations on their ability, the gender stereotypes. You can see now that young girls can want to be without limitations and for that we have to recognise that we came a long way and that train cannot be stopped now,” she said.

Johnson-Sirleaf arrived in Namibia yesterday for a three-day visit to officially hand the African Gender Award (AGA) to President Hage Geingob in recognition of the country’s achievements in promoting and protecting women’s rights and enhancing gender equality by the international Gender is My Agenda Campaign.

The African Gender Award ceremony with take place at a Windhoek hotel later today.
