THE Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) has announced that all its management positions have been declared vacant.
These positions include that of the national rugby coach, Hakkies Husselman, who took the Namibian team to the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. The others include the entire coaching and technical staff, according to the NRU chief executive officer, Christo Alexander. He said the positions would be advertised and the successfully candidates would be in charge for a period of four years.”All positions will be advertised and filled for the next four years, until the following Rugby World Cup in New Zealand 2011,” he said. This means that a new management team and possibly a new coach will be appointed a few months before the next World Cup.The NRU has in the past dropped coaches just months before the Rugby World Cup, with Johan Venter being the biggest victim, as he had to miss out on two World Cups, despite having the team qualify for it.Said Alexander: “It is also a common practice that exists throughout the rugby world that team managements, including coaches, are replaced or re-appointed after World Cup tournaments.”He said all the outgoing management members were welcome to apply for the vacant positions if they wished to do so.Namibia has had an unsuccessful tournament in France at which they lost all four their group matches, but were praised for their gutsy display throughout the tournament, a big improvement from their 2003 campaign.
