THIS week’s announcement that former DTA president Katuutire Kaura has been appointed adviser to the Kunene regional governor has not gone down well with the opposition National Unity Democratic Organisation.
Nudo issued a statement yesterday in which it said President Hage Geingob’s appointment of Kaura as Kunene north adviser was “not so lofty a gesture by the President as some people want us to believe”.
“It has nothing to do with the policy of national reconciliation either, neither is it a move to bring former enemies closer. This decision is a strategic, clandestine and well-orchestrated move by the big man and Swapo by extension. The Swapo party is behaving like a scorned woman, jealously guarding against any progress of opposition parties and will go to great lengths to make sure that they defeat any opposition party in its stronghold, by hook or by crook,” Nudo presidential adviser Joseph Kauandenge said in a statement.
Vice president Nickey Iyambo announced during his visit to Kunene region yesterday that Kaura and John //Khamuseb, a former Swapo coordinator at Khorixas, had been appointed advisers to governor Angelika Muharukua.
Kaura will advise the governor on matters pertaining to Kunene north while //Khamuseb will be for Kunene south.
Kauandenge claimed that Kaura’s appointment is to neutralise the DTA dominance in that region and by extension that of Nudo.
“We refuse to live in a quasi democracy under a disguised one-party state masquerading under a democratic constitution, while in reality we live in a one-party state de facto,” Kauandenge said.
He called for a united opposition front.
“The onus is now on the opposition parties to realise that the more we remain fragmented the more we give Swapo room to penetrate our constituencies and render us as has-beens in the dustbin of political history.
“We know for a fact that in days to come Kaura will be used to canvass support for the ruling party. However, we remain defiant and ready to fight this battle with Swapo so that they do not get hold of Kunene as well,” he said.
