National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) president Ester Muinjangue has endorsed her vice president, Peter Kazongomuinja, to stand as party president at the party’s upcoming congress.
The event is scheduled for 12 to 13 July.
This comes after Kazongomuinja told Desert Radio on Tuesday that Muinjangue will not stand for a second term as party president.
“She told me because she is not standing any more, she wants me to move up and contest against others,” he said.
“That is what she has done, and I was not in the mood to fight her.
“She said ‘if I am out, you must be in’,” Kazongomuinja said.
Muinjangue on Tuesday said she would hold a press briefing on Wednesday regarding the matter.
The Aminuis constituency councillor last week hinted at potentially running for the top job, but added he was waiting for the right time to confirm this.
Recent media reports alluded to toxic masculinity in the party being a reason why Muinjangue decided not to stand for another term.
Kazongomuinja said this could be true.
“I cannot confirm or deny this to be the case, but the party has a tribal backbone.
“This sees some men having a problem with women leading them,” he said.
Kazongomuinja, however, emphasised that he has not fallen victim to gender issues in the party.
He will face his secretary general, Joseph Kaundenge, for the position of party president in the upcoming congress.
