Nujoma’s leadership skills defeated Caprivi succession ideas

Founding president Sam Nujoma has received praise for his leadership skills which ensured that the planned succession attempts of the Zambezi region (Caprivi Strip) in 1999 and 2002 did not succeed.

These were some of the sentiments shared by regional governor Lawrence Sampofu and Nujoma’s granddaughter, Ujama Nujoma, at the regional memorial service on Sunday.

Sampofu said during the so-called attack on the region by the Caprivi Liberation Army of Mishake Muyongo, Nujoma quickly commanded that the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) be deployed to deal with the uprising.

He said they were defeated by the NDF, led by retired lieutenant general Martin Shalli, in just six days.

“The founding father commanded and quickly deployed the NDF, which thwarted the Muyongo gang and uprising in a few days and eliminated many of them,” he said.

Similary, Ujama noted that her grandfather protected the territorial integrity of Namibia, ensuring the safety of the people during enemy attacks.

“This was evident in the enemy attack in this region in 2002. He was dedicated to safeguarding the lives of all Namibians. He promised that the enemy would be defeated and the restoration of peace and stability to this region and the country,” she said.
