The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) will soon have its first graduation ceremony where over 1 000 students will graduate with qualifications from various faculties.
The event will be held at a local hotel in the capital on 28 and 29 April this year.
Speaking to Nampa on Friday, NUST Director of Marketing and Communications Kaitira Kandjii said the institution is beaming with pride as this will be its first graduation ceremony as a university.
“It is a remarkable achievement for the institution and we have a huge number of students graduating. We have students receiving the Bachelor of Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Care for the first time as well as Masters of Natural Resources Management, amongst others.”
Cabinet gave approval in December 2012 to officially transform the then Polytechnic of Namibia into a university, and the NUST Act was gazetted in September 2015, which ultimately led to the name change in November that same year.
Students will be graduating from all six faculties namely Computing and Informatics; Engineering; Health and Applied Sciences; Human Sciences; Management Sciences and Natural Resources; and Spatial Sciences.
NUST, the University of Namibia (UNAM), both state-owned, and the privately-owned International University of Management (IUM) are the only universities in Namibia.
Kandjii said the institution, as per a Cabinet directive after its transformation into a university, will phase out certificate and diploma courses over the next five years.
“In line with the directive, the responsibility of these qualifications are to be given to colleges that are to be established in order to ensure that market demands are catered for.”
NUST will have its next graduation in October this year.
