Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) have informed hikers that a recent assessment of the Fish River Canyon, conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, indicated lower than expected water levels due to low rainfall in the south of the country.
In a media statement on Wednesday, NWR spokesperson Nelson Ashipala said the NWR deployed water marshals in the canyon to assist hikers during the hiking season, which starts on 1 May.
“These water marshals will ensure that hikers have access to safe drinking water and will monitor water usage to conserve this valuable resource,” Ashipala said.
Hikers are advised to carry water purification tablets during their hike to ensure they have access to clean water at all times, Ashipala said.
“This precautionary measure is essential, especially in light of the low water levels in the canyon. NWR remains committed to ensuring all hikers have a safe and enjoyable experience at Fish River Canyon,” he said.
The NWR also encourages hikers to adhere to all safety protocols and to respect the environment while hiking, he said.
