OUTGOING Rally for Democracy and Progress Member of Parliament Jesaya Nyamu has called on young parliamentarians to keep the nation united and avoid divisive attitudes.
“Some of us are stepping aside, and as young parliamentarians, you should keep the nation united for the sake of the future generations,” Nyamu said whilst bidding his fellow parliamentarians farewell in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
“The old guard is moving aside, and what you should know is that a different opinion does not mean animosity. That is democracy,” he advised. Nyamu indicated last year that he would not be returning to parliament in 2015 as he planned to step down as a politician.
He has since been calling on older politicians to step aside as well and give the youth a chance to take over.
In his moving address, Nyamu praised the Speaker of the National Assembly, Theo Ben Gurirab, and his deputy, Loide Kasingo, for maintaining impartiality and tolerance during the NA sessions.
“This is democracy in motion,” he noted. Nyamu was expelled by the Swapo Party’s Politburo in December 2006 for alleged attempts to create a split in the party.
Last year, Nyamu made known that come the second RDP convention – which took place two weeks ago – he would not seek to be voted for in any RDP – governing structures. He, however, indicated that “stepping aside from the top leadership position in the party is not resigning from the party”.
He said he will still serve the party as an ordinary member after completing his term of office as MP. – Nampa
