Official who shot himself amid traditional bowl saga back at work today

THE Ministry of Works and Transport official who allegedly shot himself after a traditional bowl, known as etiti, was discovered buried along the Ondangwa-Ongwediva road with the names of his colleagues written inside it, has recovered and is expected to report to work today.

Julius Shongolo, who is employed as a senior administrative officer at the government garage at Ondangwa, attempted to take his life after the discovery of the bowl in January.

Sources at the government garage this week confirmed to The Namibian that Shongolo would resume work today.

Contacted for comment last week, Shongolo declined, saying he was driving.

Calls to his cellphone went unanswered yesterday.

Government garage employees yesterday said they are afraid of Shongolo and do not know why he wrote their names inside the bowl.

“They sent social workers on Friday to talk to us, but that has not helped us. We don't know why he wrote our names,” one of the employees said.

Ministry spokesperson Julius Ngweda was not available for comment yesterday.

Among the names appearing in the bowl are the head of Ondangwa's government garage, Aron Amakali, the deputy director of the garage, Nande Amakali, and the chief artisan foreman, Mathew Ameya.

Other names include the director of the government garage, Sam Kadhikwa, works inspector Josephina Shekudja, a certain 'Konstantin', an investigator at the ministry, and chief works inspector George Kapofi.

The bowl, along with a copy of a charge sheet issued to Shongolo, was discovered by a trainee at the government garage.

He allegedly saw Shongolo, who was travelling in his official vehicle at the time, bury something near the road.

Shongolo is faced with charges of misconduct in connection with the procurement of car parts worth about N$120 000.
