Oil and gas condensate discovered offshore Namibia

A major discovery of oil and natural gas has been made in Namibian waters.

The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor), with partners Galp Energia (80% operator) and Custos (10%), have announced the discovery of significant hydrocarbon potential at the Mopane-2A well in Petroleum Exploration Licence 83, located in the Orange Basin, offshore Namibia.

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds of hydrogen and carbon, which serve as the primary components of oil and natural gas.

Drilling on the well began on 2 December.

“Mopane-2A encountered a gas-condensate hydrocarbon column in the AVO-3 reservoir, featuring a thin net pay within the sweet spot.

Additionally, a light oil column was discovered in the smaller AVO-4 reservoir. Both reservoirs exhibited high-quality sands with excellent porosity, permeability, high pressures, and low fluid viscosity,” Namcor noted in a statement on Monday.

Namcor and partners say they are now analysing the results to evaluate the commercial viability of the discoveries.

Meanwhile, the drilling is relocating to the Mopane-3X exploration well to target the AVO-10 and AVO-13 prospects, with drilling expected to start on Wednesday.

“Simultaneously, the joint venture is conducting a high-density, high-resolution 3D seismic campaign over the Mopane complex to further refine development plans for the area,” Namcor said.

This significant find could potentially bring substantial economic benefits to the country.
