Okahandja magistrate accused of slapping cleaner

The police is investigating a magistrate at Okahandja who allegedly assaulted a cleaner.

Otjozondjupa regional police spokesperson senior inspector Maureen Mbeha yesterday confirmed that an investigation into the matter is ongoing.

“Although a case has been opened, the suspect has not been arrested or charged yet,” she said.

According to a formal complaint filed by Thobias Kamuhapita (59) on 29 July at the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court, there have been numerous incidents of physical abuse since February.

The magistrate has not appeared in court and can therefore not be named.

Kamuhapita in a letter to The Namibian claims he has been verbally and physically assaulted.

“There have been several incidents of physical abuse against me, and I feel it is appropriate to take steps in addressing my concern,” he says.

“I have been physically and verbally abused by the magistrate at the station since February 2024.

He claims the magistrate slapped him in full view of other staff members in another incident last month.

“He slapped me with an open hand. I was shocked that the magistrate could assault me in front of most of the staff members at the office.”
Kamuhapita says he felt humiliated after the assault.

“I feel so humiliated and violated, and that is why I have decided to open a criminal case against him, as I fear for my safety at work.

“I am an elderly person who is 59 years old, heading to retirement. I have worked at many stations, and this has never happened to me before,” he says.

He says the management has failed to resolve the matter.

“I have been victimised, harassed and abused in a government office by people who are supposed to uphold the law in the Ministry of Justice.

“Please look into the conduct of the magistrate, as I fear my rights are not being observed [sic] in the office.”
