Okahandja water crisis: Team races to restore supply after pipe burst

Okahandja is faced with water shortages after heavy rains damaged pipes, but the municipality and NamWater say they are working to restore supply as soon as possible.

Okahandja deputy mayor Akser Aupindi says the municipality, alongside the Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater), is working tirelessly to restore water to the affected areas at the town.

“NamWater and the Okahandja municipality are in operation to make sure water is restored. A road is being made so people can cross the river and they can start to fix the pipe immediately,” Aupindi says.

He says if everything goes according to plan, water will be restored by Sunday.

Aupindi says the municipality has already restored water to the local hospital, police stations and schools with hostels.

“The team is working very hard to make sure the water is connected, and it is a testimony that we have a good relationship with NamWater to assist us on the ground,” he says.

Aupindi urges residents to cooperate with the municipality and NamWater, and to exercise patience.

He says another update will be provided on Sunday.

“The rain might also be coming, but that’s not an issue, because the team really wants to make sure they have restored water to the communities so everyone feels their dignity is respected,” he says.
