Omulunga Radio, in collaboration with One Africa TV and various other sponsors, awarded nine local gospel artists at the first ever Omulunga Gospel Awards in Windhoek on Saturday.
Omulunga Radio station manager Simon Mundadala says the initiative aims to join existing initiatives in recognising and appreciating local creatives, particularly those in the gospel genre.
“We want to create a platform to appreciate the efforts of our local gospel musicians,” Mundadala says.
Nine artists, including choirs, were awarded in various categories, including best collaboration, best choir, and best gospel song of the year.
Omulunga Radio and its partners on this initiative paid a total of N$90 000 to the winners, with each winner walking away with N$10 000 and a trophy.
Mundadala says they aim to make the event bigger with the possibility of hosting it annually, moving forward.
“Next year, we want to make it bigger and better, but we need the nation’s support. We are calling on more sponsors to come on board to help appreciate and recognise local talent.”
Attendees were treated to performances by Manda Gabriel and Vuyo Johnson.
