On the Spot with the ‘Turntable King’

PRODUCER, songwriter and DJ, Bosley Keya, best known as DJ Kboz, is one of the most respected DJs in the Namibian music industry.

He has worked on award winning hits such as ‘Boss Madam’ by Sally, ‘Onkalamwenyo’ by reigning NAMAs Male Artist of the Year, Mushe, ‘Koskola Daar’ by Exit and ‘Tuhafeni Pamwe’, by last years NAMAs Female Artist of the Year, Blossom. He was also instrumental in the production of the top albums for 2013, ‘Letter To The President’ by Mushe and ‘Komuthima Gwomeya’ by Blossom.

Born in Kenya, DJ Kboz moved to Canada where he grew up while his dad was completing his studies. He moved to Namibia with his father in 1998 and like they say, the rest is history.

He is married to one of the leading ladies in the entertainment industry, Sally, and has one son. He describes music as being the connector of emotions from the physical to the spiritual.

“It is a soothing element to the soul and the best accompaniment to appreciate life. That is why I do not understand how people who have nothing to do with music have to judge our music when they have no experience in composing, making themselves vulnerable by unleashing their emotions to the world,” Kboz says.

Top 3 Books

‘A Brief History In Time’ by Stephen Hawkins, ‘Sound Engineering Explained’ by Michael Tablot Smith and ‘The 10 Commandments of Marriage’ by Ed Young.

I am a geek. Need to explain any further?

Top 3 Songs

‘Golden’ by Lady Antebellum. This song talks about the love I have for my wife and son. Life was never perfect, but you can always take small things that create imperfect perfections for you.

‘Free’ by Rudimental. The song reminds me of how I was the underdog at school and was always undermined by people around me, even where I used to work, but I fought it all and climbed to the top. Achievements are all about your mindset and not what people dictate to you.

‘Story of My Life’ by One Direction. I think every one has memories of their life that are pasted in their hearts that have made us who we are. As we grow, family changes, expands and you realise you created a story of your own.

Top 3 Movies

‘Man of Steel’ directed by Zack Snyder, ‘Now You See’ directed by Louis Leterrier, ‘The Avengers’ directed by Josh Whedon. In my opinion, these movies stood out because of the lengths the directors went to work on the costumes and visuals. Most movies fail on that.

Favourite Quote

My favourite quote is from my father. “No man has ever smiled all his life.” Which means stop thinking life is all butterflies and roses. Be ready for the worst.
