THE Ondangwa Town council has embarked on a project to construct about 350 housing units for low and medium income earners.
These houses are being constructed at a newly established township, called Extention 21.
Ondangwa chief executive officer Ismael Namugongo, said the houses will be constructed through a public private partnership (PPP) with local developers.
“All the houses being constructed already have owners, who were selected from the list of people who applied for residential erven on a first come first served basis. As a council, we decided to build houses for people instead of allocating them erven, as many may find it hard to develop and end up selling the plots, something we are totally against,” he said.
Namugongo added that the town council has serviced the area with water and sewer networks and is busy setting up street lights and constructing tarred roads leading up to the area.
He said the need for land delivery continues to grow as more residents are in need houses, but the council is unable to deliver timely due to limited funds.
He said the council had also established a new informal settlement where a number of residents are expected to be relocated to pave way for new developments.
During the current financial year, the council set aside N$43,1 million for capital projects.
