THE Ondangwa Town Council has made funds available for the construction of a major road intersection that would significantly reduce traffic congestion in the town’s central business district.
The intersection that stretches 2,2 kilometres will cost the town council N$16,7 million.
The project, which started last month, is expected to take seven months to complete.
Ondangwa chief executive officer Ismael Namugongo, during the site handover at Extension 16 recently, said the new road intersection would greatly reduce the huge traffic volumes experienced during peak holiday seasons on the B1 road that pass through the town.
“The road that we are going to construct will be one of the longest road intersections we have in town. It will relieve road users because the existing B1 road that passes through the town gets congested. We want to reduce the traffic flow and ease road congestion. Our town is also growing fast pace, hence the need to improve on our service delivery,” he said.
Namugongo added that the construction of the intersection is fully funded by the town council.
The new road intersection, named after founding president Sam Nujoma, will serve as an alternative route to relieve traffic congestion on the B1 main road.
Ondangwa town mayor Paavo Amwele said during the festive season the B1 main road gets congested, frustrating motorists, as they are mostly forced to spend many hours on the road-a situation that sometimes hinders effective service delivery.
Ondangwa Town Council has earmarked N$49 million for development expenditure during this financial year.
