Oshigambo High School in financial crisis

Oshigambo High School in the Oshikoto region has announced that it might not open its doors for the second semester next week if the Oshikoto education directorate does not pay its subsidy to the school by Friday.

This was announced by the school board chairperson, Simon IItula, on Thursday.
This comes after two pupils were suspended from the school hostel last month due to disciplinary issues.

In a letter to parents seen by The Namibian, Iitula said the regional education directorate refused to resolve issues of outstanding subsidies despite efforts made by the ministry on 4 July 2024.

“As responsible stewards of our students’ well-being, we cannot in good conscience commence the semester without ensuring the provision of adequate resources for all 471 students. The unresolved subsidy issue has placed us in an untenable position as we are not prepared to allow our students to suffer at the expense of charismatic church ideologies and the indiscipline of the two students who were suspended from the hostel,” Iitula said.

According to Iitula, if the directorate fails to address the subsidy payment by Friday, the school will be left with no choice but to take drastic measures.

“In such an event, you will be informed on Saturday morning not to bring your child to school on Sunday, 14 July 2024,” he said.

He added: “We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause and urge you to understand the gravity of the situation. Our priority remains the welfare and education of our students and we hope for a swift resolution to this matter,”.

This is a developing story.
