Ovaherero paramount chief cancels all commemorative events

A splinter group of the Ovaherero under paramount chief Hoze Riruako has cancelled all commemorative events to encourage its subects to be peaceful.

Riruako said the decision was taken after a careful assessment of the current climate prevalent in the community and ensures no bloodshed occurs.

“I, as paramount chief of Ovaherero, hereby announce that we have put in place an indefinite cancellation of all commemorative and group events in respect of our herero community,” the chief said.

He said the indefinite decision will not impact weddings and funerals, which do not require the OTA.

Riruako said the cancellation serves to inform the Ovaherero people to be on alert and exercise restraint when attending events where threats of conflict may arise.

“My leaders and I undertake to revisit this decision as and when the current tension within the community subsides,” he said.
