Over 1 000 African women gather in Joburg to discuss empowerment, equality

Women from across Africa recently came together in Johannesburg for the African Women in Dialogue (Afwid) event aimed at fostering unity and addressing key challenges faced by women on the continent.

Afwid founder Zanele Mbeki said Afwid, a programme of the Women’s Development Business (WDB) trust, is committed to driving sustainable development by supporting women.

“Our work here is more crucial than ever, as we face the pressing challenges of inequality, poverty, climate change, violence, and conflict in different areas of the continent.

“This dialogue presents an opportunity for us to shape the future of women across the continent and beyond. We are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on gender equality,” she said.

According to WDB chief executive Riah Phiyega, the aim is to achieve a feminist democracy that ensures women’s voices are heard and their contributions are valued.

“Our theme, ‘Women’s Power and Voice as Agents of Change’, is a testament to the vital role women play in shaping our world.

“It honours the courageous foremothers who tirelessly fought for our rights, and embraces the vision of a future where every girl and woman can thrive free from discrimination, violence, and inequality,” she said.

Phiyega said the event is a clarion call for women to continue pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and creating a world in which gender equality is a reality.
