Over 40 000 uncollected IDs at home affairs

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security says over 40 120 identification (ID) cards at its offices have not been collected.

This is out of more than 94 310 people who applied for national documents through the ministry’s mass registration initiative, launched in February.

The initiative is slated to end on 31 July.

It provides services such as birth registrations, birth certificate duplication, new ID card applications, ID card duplication, ID card collection, as well as the registration of stateless and undocumented people.

“While the ministry is working on more effective strategies to distribute the ID cards, including using the assistance of constituency councillors, members of the public are urged to collect their cards at their respective regional offices,” deputy minister Lucia Witbooi said yesterday.

She was speaking at a Cabinet committee briefing in Windhoek.

“This programme ends on 31 July, and people are encouraged to make use of this opportunity. No applicant will be turned away without his or her details being taken,” Witbooi said.
