The Namibian Police on Wednesday launched its festive season operation at the Onhuno traffic check point in the Ohangwena region.
Ohangwena regional commander commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa said the region has recorded 710 road crashes, 40 fatalities, 130 severe injuries and 188 slight injuries between 2023 and 2024. She was speaking during the launch of the operation on Wednesday.
Kashuupulwa said there is an increase in crimes during the festive season ranging from robbery, house breaking and stock theft associated with the use of alcohol and drugs.
“Over the past years we have observed that criminal activities escalate during the festive season when business centres become overcrowded. Gender-based violence and human trafficking have also become crimes of concern in the region,” Kashuupulwa indicated.
“The Namibian Police are mandated with the presentation of internal security and the maintenance of law and order. I, therefore, request the security cluster, as well as stakeholders in the fight against crime to dedicate their efforts in performing their duties and obligations by ensuring maximum safety and security of people and their properties during the festive season and beyond,” urged Kashuupulwa.
The festive season operation was launched countrywide on 17 November and will run until 17 January 2025.
“I believe and trust that if we work together as a team, we can have a long lasting impact on crime prevention strategies. This launching provides information on how to stay safe and encourage the business fraternity, government agencies and the general public to play an active role in the fight against criminal activities,” she noted.
Speaking at the same occasion, Ohangwena region governor Sebastian Ndeitunga also encouraged road users to adhere to traffic rules.
