Greek triathlete Panagiotis Bitados and Dutch competitor Rachel Klamer emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s elite categories of the Africa Triathlon Cup held at Swakopmund on Saturday.

Justus Nieschlag and Valentin Wernz of Germany secured second and third place in the men’s race, while Bridget Theunissen of South Africa and Finja Schierl of Germany completed the women’s podium.

This was the first race in Namibia for Bitados, who said the cycling segment posed challenges due to slippery conditions.

“The weather was amazing; the swimming course was really good, with a big start, and the kids were able to go out into the sea, so it was really enjoyable,” he said.

“I had to be careful on the turns, because it is still early in the season and I want to protect my body for the next races. It was a very technical course, but I really enjoyed it.”

The triathlete is headed to Gran Canaria for a training camp in preparation of a long-distance race in May.

For Klamer, this was her second race in Namibia, having competed two years ago when she finished second due to a running injury.

“I was not particularly strong for this race due to illness, but luckily I was with a great group of girls on the bike ride. I managed to catch up and decided to push ahead. I am happy with the win,” she said.

Unlike previous seasons, Klamer is taking a more relaxed approach to competitions this year, saying she is choosing races she enjoys rather than rigidly planning her calendar.

The fourth edition of the Africa Triathlon Cup recorded its highest number of participants, with nearly 150 competitors participating.

President of the Namibia Triathlon Federation Michael Greef has expressed optimism for the future, saying the federation is aiming to surpass 250 entries next year and to continue growing the sport in Namibia.

“The competition served as both the national championship and the Africa Cup and also played a crucial role in Olympics preparations. It not only featured elite, junior, and age-group athletes, but also the growing Paralympic division, whose participation we plan to expand,” he says.
