Parkies look to future

Parkies look to future

THE Pionierspark Primary School recently held a fundraising dinner for the school’s under-9 rugby team which has a 100 per cent record in their matches played this year.

The team, popularly known as Parkies, is planning to have a tour to Argentina in 2011, when the players will be playing for the under-13 side.According to their coach, Appie Oberholzer, the side had successful tours to South Africa in the past and at the moment remain undefeated in their age group on home soil. The tour to Argentina is a long-term project of the team and the fundraising dinner is one of the initiatives to make the dream of the young players a reality. The gala dinner, which was held on September 18 at the school hall, was graced by the presence of former South African Springbok prop Kobus Wiese, who conducted interviews with several former South West Africa rugby players.During the event, which was attended by at least 300 guests, an auction of various items was held to help in the cause of raising funds for the team. The items ranged from rugby balls to signed replica shirts of the Sharks, Lions, Blue Bulls, Western Province and Springboks, while there were various wine bottles with the autographs of famous South African rugby players such as Schalk Burger, Joost van der Westhuizen and Namibia’s Heino Senekal.
