Arrested passenger accused of saying bomb could be on aircraft

A 66-year-old man who was arrested at the Hosea Kutako International Airport on Tuesday had allegedly said there could be a bomb on a flight.

Police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says the man had allegedly uttered the words: “There could be a bomb on the aircraft, for all we know.”

These words had allegedly caused panic at the airport, with security personnel and the police getting involved.

Shikwambi, who confirmed the arrest, says the man is charged under the Civil Aviation Act.

“He is expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Thursday,” she says.

According to Namibia Airports Company spokesperson Dan Kamati, the suspect was a passenger who boarded a departing regional flight. The bomb threat, he says, was confirmed to be a security breach.

“Necessary security protocols were activated, which included the involvement of the Namibian Police Force bomb squad. Following swift action by stakeholders, the flight was cleared and the airport was reopened for normal operations,” he says.
