PDM bigger than individuals – Venaani

POPULAR Democratic Movement incumbent president McHenry Venaani has reminded the delegates to the party’s elective congress that no individual is bigger than the party.

Venaani said this on Saturday when he addressed the delegates attending the congress underway at Keetmanshoop.

He also urged the delegates to sustain and demonstrate the understanding that characterises the movement established 42 years ago as the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance ( DTA).

“Personal interests cannot be greater than the movement,” he stressed.

Venaani, who is seeking re-election to lead the party for another five-year term, told the delegates that he was ready to lead the battle into the enemy territory.

“No more deals to favour politicians and their foreign masters. Namibia first, Namibians first, ” he stated, adding that this should be the basis of any deals foreign governments and their state companies approaching government for investment opportunities.

“Enough is enough, ” he added.

The party’s presidential candidate further pledged he would remain a loyal party supporter even if he loses the contest.

“I would not become an advisor somewhere else if I lose,” he remarked, referring to the appointment of former DTA president Katuutire Kaura, who lost the party presidential race to him in 2014.

“Winners and losers are products of democracy,” he noted.

Venaani said he would present a report on the state of the party affairs and political situation in general to the congress as required by the party’s constitution.

The Namibian understands that names of candidates vying for the party’s top positions – president, vice president, secretary general, deputy secretary general, treasury, national chairperson as well central committee members will be nominated from the floor.

Sources said Venaani might not be challenged for the presidency.
