PDM congress to go ahead

Manuel Ngaringombe

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) secretary general Manuel Ngaringombe has said the party’s elective congress will go ahead as planned, despite rumours that it will be postponed.

Ngaringombe confirmed on Tuesday that the congress will be held at Katima Mulilo from 9 to 11 August 2024, after rumours started circulating within the party that there are plans to postpone it.

“No, the congress will go ahead as planned. No plans for postponement,” Ngaringombe said.

The congress is expected to return current party president McHenry Venaani as its president.

Ngaringombe confirmed to The Namibian two months ago that he will seek re-election as secretary general.

A party source told The Namibian at the time that former PDM member of parliament Johannes Martin may challenge Ngaringombe.

Former youth league leader Benson Katjirijova also indicated that he would contest the deputy secretary general position, which is currently occupied by Linus Tobias.

The party chief whip in the National Assembly Elma Dienda is reportedly vying for the party’s vice president position, which is currently occupied by Jenifer van den Heever.

Dienda denied that she was interested in the position when The Namibian contacted her in April.

Another person who is said to be interested in the position is former legislator Esmeralda !Abes.

Current PDM treasurer Nico Smit is likely to be challenged by party member Pieter Mostert, while Godfred Mwilima will allegedly challenge Diederik Vries for the position of party chairperson.
