PDM Youth League calls for investigation into Swapo Party Youth League political activity at Unam

The Popular Democratic Movement Youth League (PDMYL) has called for an immediate investigation by the University of Namibia main campus management into the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL).

This comes after SPYL hosted political activities on University of Namibia (Unam) grounds on Friday despite a ban of political activities on campus.

The university in April issued a countywide ban of political activities on all its 12 campuses.

PDMYL spokesperson Inajovandu Katjepunda says the league unequivocally condemns the blatant and unlawful use of the university campus as a political playground by the SPYL and their affiliates.

“The PDMYL will not tolerate such biased and corrupt practices. We call on the university administration to immediately halt these activities, investigate the 13 September Swapo activities on campus, and enforce its rules impartially. Political favouritism has no place in our academic institutions, and the Swapo Youth League should be ashamed for undermining the integrity of student representation,” Katjepunda says.

She adds: “Reports indicate that the Unam Students Representative Council (SRC), led by Swapo-affiliated individuals, has turned its office into an unofficial campaign headquarters for Swapo, as seen in a video circulating of individuals with Swapo regalia in SRC offices and corridors accompanied by some members of the SRC”.

Katjepunda says such acts are a violation of the university’s instructions, which prohibits political party activities on campus.

“Yet, Unam has clearly turned a blind eye, selectively enforcing this ban in favour of Swapo while silencing other political groups. We demand accountability from Unam and call for the protection of the university as a neutral space, free from partisan manipulation. We will not turn a blind eye on this issue,” Katjepunda says.
