The Outapi police arrested a pensioner (73) on Sunday after he allegedly drove into an Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) gathering, injuring one person on Saturday.
The incident happened at around 13h00.
The suspect, who is allegedly a Swapo member, has been charged with attempted murder.
“Yes, it is alleged that the suspect drove in the direction of a group of people and caused them to run away in all directions in fear, and in the process one person got injured in the knees and ended up with a dislocated knee cap,” Omusati police commissioner Ismael Basson said.
The suspect is set to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
IPC spokesperson Immanuel Nashinge has confirmed the incident.
“I was not there, but I have reports that a Swapo member disrupted a gathering at the inauguration of our office in the Omusati region,” he said.
Swapo regional coordinator Sacky Kayone on Sunday said he was not aware of the incident, and was gathering information on it.
“I am not aware of the incident. I have received phone calls from other media houses regarding the matter, so we are gathering information to find out what really happened,” he said.
