Pensioner drowns in Okavango River

A man (69) allegedly drowned in the Okavango River at Nankudu village on Monday.

Police chief inspector Raimbert Muronga says it is alleged the deceased left the house at around 17h00 to go check on his fishing net at the river, but he never returned home.

On Tuesday, the family of the pensioner followed his tracks to the river, uncovering his clothing at the riverbank – consisting of a pair of shoes, black jeans and a grey floppy cap.

Muronga says members of the Namibian Police Water Wing Directorate joined the search and discovered his body in the river near Tondoro village, about five kilometres from where his clothes were found.

The deceased was identified by his family as Kavamba Selestinus Tjitwe, a resident of Nankudu.

As part of the investigations, an autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
