Petrofund has awarded N$1 million in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) scholarships to 13 students to boost skills for Namibia’s growing oil and gas sector.
The students are from the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology, and will benefit from the N$1 069 900 scholarship over the next three years.
The scholarships apply to students pursuing critical trades in boilermaking, electrical work, and fitting and turning.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at Keetmanshoop on Tuesday, Petrofund chief executive Nillian Mulemi said the company recognises the importance of technical skills and qualifications in the emerging oil and gas industry.
“This is why we partnered with the !Nami≠Nüs constituency and Chevron to ensure that young people, particularly from our southern regions, have the opportunity to gain the skills and experience necessary to participate meaningfully in the petroleum sector,” she said.
Mulemi said the oil and gas industry is growing at an unprecedented pace and it is imperative that Namibia accelerate its efforts to build the technical capacity of as many Namibians as possible, especially through TVET programmes in preparation for the much-anticipated final investment decision (FID) by operators in the sector.
‘ECONOMY WILL CHANGE DRAMATICALLY’
“Once the FID is announced, Namibia’s economic landscape will change dramatically, offering wide-ranging benefits – both directly and indirectly – to our people. I, therefore, urge all Namibians to prepare themselves and embrace opportunities that will emerge,” she said.
!Nami≠Nüs constituency councillor Suzan Ndjaleka said Petrofund’s gesture signifies a commitment to inclusivity, where every resident, regardless of their background or circumstances, can access career opportunities that contribute to their well-being.
“It reflects our shared responsibility to build a community where no one is left behind and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
“May the scholarship be a beacon of positive change contributing to the continued growth and prosperity of our region,” she said.
The scholarships will cover the students’ accommodation, transport, trade test fees, meal allowances and pocket money, while the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund will cover their tuition fees.
