COASTAL Pirates once again dominated the Namibian inline hockey season which was recently completed, winning seven of the 10 age group league titles on offer.
After Pirates recently hosted the final league tournament in Swakopmund, the inline hockey season will now be concluded next weekend from 2 to 4 November when the Theo Superspar Inline Hockey Championships will be held at the Kamikaze rink in Windhoek.
The Pirates tournament was one of five club tournaments held through the year with the others being hosted by Cazadores, Kamikaze and Badgers in Windhoek, and Scorpions in Otjiwarongo.
Apart from the league, several social tournaments were hosted by individual clubs and the Namibia Ice and Inline Hockey Association (Niiha) also presented several training camps, referee clinics and youth development camps.
With the sport enjoying tremendous growth in player numbers, the days of hosting a tournament over a weekend only are long gone.
The Pirates tournament was once again very busy, while they were the only club to be able to schedule games on two rinks simultaneously.
Pirates dominated the u12, u14 and u16 age group categories winning gold in all three, while they also finished first in the Women’;s Open, Women’;s Masters, Men’;s Open and Men’;s Senior categories.
Cazadores came first in the 8 and under age group category, while Scorpions won the 10 and under category, and Badgers the 18 and under category.
The season also saw the successful hosting of the second Africa Cup at the Swakopmund Dome, which is the only international inline hockey competition hosted on the African continent.
Besides this Namibia also excelled internationally with the national junior men’;s team winning the gold medal in the Nations Cup at the World Skate Inline Hockey Championships in Italy, while they achieved their highest ever international ranking of ninth.
The junior men’;s team was subsequently also nominated for the Team of the Year category at the Namibia Sport Awards which will be hosted at the Dome in Swakopmund tomorrow evening.
