Police discover rustlers’ kraal

NDAMA – The Namibian Police at Rundu have discovered a kraal in the Kavango Region where suspected stolen cattle are being kept and sold.
The kraal, which is about 300 metres long, is located some 5,4km deep in the forest at the Ndama informal settlement in the Rundu Rural West Constituency.

Following a tip-off from concerned community members, the Namibian Police visited the kraal in the early hours of Monday. They found 118 cattle of which 82 were heifers. Two people living in a zinc room next to the kraal fledinto the bush after seeing a Police vehicle arrive at the kraal. Kavango Regional Namibian Police crime coordinator, Chief Inspector Moritz !Naruseb told this reporter on Monday that from the information they had gathered, the kraal might have been in existence for about three to four months.According to Police information, the kraal is used to keep stolen cattle so that they can be slaughtered. The meat is later sold in town and surrounding areas. When this reporter visited the kraal on Monday afternoon, the intestines of recently slaughtered cattle were hanging from a tree while about seven recently dug holes had been covered with sand.It is suspected that the remains of some of the slaughtered cattle are buried in the holes to avoid those cattle from being traced. Nine calves were found wandering around the kraal. Their mothers were nowhere to be seen. Police have now cautioned cattle farmers in the surrounding areas to be on the lookout for stolen cattle, and to report any cases of stock theft to their nearest Police station. – Nampa
