Police investigates Ukrainian crew member’s death aboard Jupiter One

The police are investigating the death of a 48-year-old Ukrainian crew member Balyas Roman on Saturday morning.

Roman was a crew member aboard the Jupiter One, a fishing vessel owned by Namsov Fishing Company, anchored off the coast of Walvis Bay.

According to a police incident report, Roman reportedly woke up that morning complaining that he was unwell.

He sought medical assistance from the vessel’s clinic where the onboard doctor treated him.

However, as his condition worsened, the captain was advised to notify Namsov’s office to summon paramedics.

According to the police, despite efforts by the paramedics who arrived promptly at the scene, Roman was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts failed.

His body was later transported to the Walvis Bay police mortuary.

Authorities have informed his next of kin, and while no foul play is suspected, investigations into the exact cause of death are ongoing.

Namsov fleet manager Kennedy Mbanga has expressed his sadness at the loss of Roman who had been with the company for about a year.

“He was a very friendly person and well-liked by his fellow crew members. His death came as a shock, and we are deeply saddened by the loss,” Mbanga told The Namibian.

“We suspect it may have been a heart attack, but the police are still investigating. Roman got along well with everyone and was a good colleague and fisherman. He will be missed.”
